Introduction
As of September 2023, Ludacris’ net worth is estimated to be $30 Million; making him one of the top 100 richest rappers in the world.
Ludacris is an American rapper, actor, and entrepreneur from Champaign, Illinois.
He’s also the founder of ‘Disturbing tha Peace’, an imprint distributed by Def Jam Recordings.
If you don’t know him from some of his best music in the early 2000s, then you probably know him from his role as Tej Parker in the Fast & Furious franchise.
Early Life
Ludacris was born Christopher Brian Bridges on the 11th of September, 1977, in Champaign, Illinois.
He doesn’t have any siblings, and although he was born in Champaign, he grew up in Chicago.
Ludacris attended Emerson Middle School in Oak Park and Oak Park & River Forest High School for a single year.
The family then moved to Centreville, Virginia, and Ludacris attended Centreville High School for one year, as well as Banneker High School in Atlanta, Georgia; which he graduated from in 1995.
Essentially, the family moved around a lot, and he attended a large number of schools.
Ludacris wrote his first rap when he was only nine years old and joined a rap group when he was twelve.
After graduating high school, Bridges studied music at Georgia State University.
Career
Music Career
In the late 90s, Ludacris began his career in the music industry as a DJ at the radio station ‘Hot 97.5’ (now ‘Hot 107.9’) in Atlanta.
During his time at the station, Ludacris DJ’d under the name ‘Chris Lova Lova’, and worked on his own rap music on the side.
Ludacris met the hip-hop producer Timbaland whilst working at ‘Hot 97.5’, and Timbaland was surprised by the fact that no labels had offered to sign the rapper.
Shortly after the pair met, Timbaland asked Ludacris to collaborate with him on a song called ‘Phat Rabbit’; which was featured on the album “Tim’s Bio: Life From Da Bassment”.
In 1998, Ludacris decided to create his own independent record label, ‘Disturbing tha Peace’, with his manager, Chaka Zulu. Chaka’s brother, Matt Dixon, also joined in on the venture.
A year later in 1999, Ludacris released his very first album, titled ‘Incognegro’.
Whilst the album wasn’t a huge success, it did gather the attention of record labels, and Ludacris signed with Def Jam Records in the year 2000.
In the same year, he would release his second album, ‘Back for the First Time’, featuring artists such as UGK, Pharrell Williams, Trina, Lil’ Fate, and Fate Wilson.
Ludacris would go on to release another 6 studio albums within the decade, before taking time off to put more effort and time into his acting career, and business ventures.
His latest studio album, ‘Ludaversal’ was released in 2015. Since then, Ludacris has released several singles, with rumors of a 10th studio album being worked on for release in the near future.
Acting Career
Luda’s acting career is more extensive than his music career, appearing in close to 30 movies, not to mention all his Television appearances.
He began acting in 2001 when he appeared as a customer in the movie, ‘The Wash’.
Other famous hip-hop artists starred in the movie, including Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Xzibit.
However, Ludacris’ most famous character role would come two years later; when he first appeared as Tej Parker in ‘2 Fast 2 Furious’, the second movie in the Fast & Furious franchise.
Luda wasn’t the only music artist to break into the film industry through the movie, as Tyrese Gibson also managed to achieve the role of Roman Pearce in the film.
The success of the Fast & Furious franchise meant that both Tyrese and Ludacris would return for most of the franchise’s sequels.
Whilst the F&F franchise is where most movie lovers will know Ludacris from, he’s also starred in many other films, including ‘Hustle & Flow’, ‘John Henry’, and ‘End of the Road’.
Ludacris has starred alongside stars such as Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Vin Diesel.
Conjure Cognac Liquor
In 2009, Ludacris created Conjure Cognac in a collaboration with famous French Cognac producer, Birkedal Hartmann.
Whilst many celebrities will endorse various liquor brands, Ludacris is actually a co-owner of Conjure Cognac and played a large part in the development process for the blend.
Soul By Ludacris
In 2011, Ludacris created his own headphone line, ‘Soul By Ludacris’, following in the footsteps of Dr. Dre with ‘Beats by Dre’, and 50 Cent with ‘SMS Audio’.
The company that originally produced the headphones is called SOUL Electronics, and it’s safe to say that their collaboration with Ludacris really did put them on the map.
There were several different models of headphones produced under the collab, including the SL150 and the SL300. However, the product line has since been discontinued.
The company does still make a wide variety of earphones, headphones, and speakers.
Chicken + Beer Restaurant
In 2016, Ludacris partnered with Jackmont Hospitality to open a Southern soul food restaurant, ‘Chicken + Beer’, at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.
The menu includes classic Southern food such as shrimp and grits, fried chicken, catfish, and mac ‘n cheese.
There’s only one ‘Chicken + Beer’ restaurant currently up and running in the US, however, the company has stated that they’ll be opening a second location at LAX airport in the near future.
